BFI is excited to welcome Malaika Murphy-Sierra as our new Communications Program Manager. Malaika brings experience in communications across higher education and mission-driven organizations. Most recently, she worked at Stanford University’s Office of Sustainability, where she led storytelling to translate complex climate and sustainability initiatives into compelling narratives for campus and public audiences. Her work focused on making topics such as energy systems, waste reduction, and climate action accessible and engaging.
Prior to Stanford, Malaika worked at Impossible Foods, where she led internal communications and engagement during a period of rapid growth. She also served for five years on the Meals on Wheels of Alameda County board of directors, supporting development and advocacy efforts to expand food access for older adults. Malaika holds a master’s degree in environmental communication and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stanford University, grounding her approach in both social science and storytelling.
BFI’s work sits at the intersection of research, policy, education, and community engagement. In this role, Malaika will help translate that work into stories that resonate with key audiences, from policymakers to campus and community partners to the broader public. Through strategic communications, she will support BFI in amplifying its impact and advancing more just, resilient, and sustainable farm and food systems.
“I’m excited to join BFI at a time when reimagining our food systems feels both urgent and possible,” says Malaika. “BFI’s ability to connect research, education, community partnerships, and real-world impact creates a powerful platform for change, and I’m looking forward to helping bring those stories to life.”
