At BFI, we are watching intently as the US Senate debates repealing and/or replacing the Affordable Care Act. According to a recently published study from an ongoing research project at the University of Vermont, an alarming 64% of farmers and ranchers report having a pre-existing condition. Furthermore, 72% of farmers must take on a secondary job to cover healthcare expenses, indicating that farmers across the US are concerned about being able to afford healthcare and maintain their livelihood. All food system workers deserve high quality, affordable healthcare for themselves and their families, and we will continue to monitor developments.
