The University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a student fellowship opportunity with the University of California Global Food Initiative (GFI). This fellowship will allow an outstanding graduate student to serve as the Fellow for Basic Needs.
FELLOWSHIP AMOUNT: $4,000

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP:
Background on the UC Global Food Initiative Student Fellowship Program: The overarching goal of the University of California Global Food Initiative is “to harness the resources of the University of California—its research, people, expertise, and tradition of public service—to put the world on a pathway to feed itself in ways that are nutritious and sustainable.” To engage students in this effort, the UC Office of the President created the President’s GFI Student Fellowship Program. The program provides each campus with funding in 2018-19 for four student awards of $4,000 each.
Basic Needs Fellowship: UC Berkeley student experience surveys identify that 39% of Undergraduates and 23% of Graduate students are food insecure. Additionally, per the Spring 2016 Housing Insecurity Preliminary Study, 11% of Undergraduates and 8% of Graduate students self-reported they experienced homelessness at some point of their UC Berkeley experience. Over the last three years, the UC System Basic Needs Committee has designed a system strategy and preventative campus model that is proactively being institutionalized across all 10 UC campuses. Fellow will work closely with committee members and chair to support the ongoing learning and progress of these collective efforts. Fellow reports to Ruben E. Canedo, UC Berkeley Basic Needs Committee Chair.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
UC Berkeley:
- Perform data analysis on Basic Needs student demographics and service impact.
- Create and curate presentations and memos on Basic Needs programming.
- Serve as project Manager and lead author of annual campus Basic Needs report.
UC System Basic Needs Committee:
- Actively participate in monthly systemwide phone meetings.
- Participate in at the two systemwide in-person meetings (1 in Fall, 1 in Spring).
- Identify which systemwide subgroup area they wish to be a member of: research, campus preventative models, systems engagement, or policy.
Other GFI Activities: Participation in GFI systemwide activities, including monthly GFI conference calls, attendance at meetings of GFI leadership, and GFI Fellows’ field trip.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Matriculated graduate student at UC Berkeley.
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills, particularly in regards to interpersonal communications across diverse groups.
- At least two years of experience in researching and/or organizing complex information and working on interdisciplinary approaches to problem-solving.
- Experience with facilitation, relationship-building, and project coordination among diverse people and programs.
- At least two years of work experience and/or public service related to food and/or agriculture, with specific experience in issues of food access and security.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a group setting; ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Ability to foresee, identify, and recommend solutions in the position’s areas of responsibility.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Comfort with creativity, innovation, and hard work.
- Professionalism, courtesy, punctuality, and good humor.
- Interest and experience in public service and social equity, as core tenets of the UC Berkeley experience and the Berkeley Food Institute mission.
FELLOWSHIP SCHEDULE:
Application must be submitted by May 20, 2018 at 5pm Pacific Time.
The student is expected to work on the campus fellowship project an average of 3-5 hours per week for the full 2018-19 academic year. Specific scheduling will be arranged with agreement of fellowship recipient and supervisor.
Systemwide activities for the GFI Fellowship program will begin with an orientation on July 9, 2018 at UC Santa Barbara. Systemwide activities and funded by the UC Global Food Initiative above and beyond the fellowship award, and will also include leadership retreats, a spring field trip, and a closing symposium and poster presentation to be held in conjunction with the CA Higher Education Sustainability Conference (CHESC) in June/July 2019. Additional activities may include quarterly conference calls, attendance at meetings of GFI leadership and participation in GFI-related activities in support of the initiative. Please note, absent exceptional circumstances, that all GFI Student Fellows and Ambassadors are expected to attend the systemwide events.
