2018-19 UC Global Food Initiative Fellowship on Soil Health

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS:

The University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a student fellowship opportunity with the University of California Global Food Initiative (GFI). This fellowship will allow an outstanding graduate student to serve as the Fellow for Soil Health.

FELLOWSHIP AMOUNT: $4,000
The funding will be administered as a stipend. Applicants should be aware that receipt of a fellowship may affect financial aid packages. If you have a question about impact on financial aid, please discuss with your financial aid officer.

Applicant must be a matriculated graduate student at UC Berkeley. To apply, submit the following items as a single pdf by email to foodinstitute@berkeley.edu with the subject line “GFI Fellowship: Soil Health.”

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP:

Background on the UC Global Food Initiative Student Fellowship Program: The overarching goal of the University of California Global Food Initiative is “to harness the resources of the University of California—its research, people, expertise, and tradition of public service—to put the world on a pathway to feed itself in ways that are nutritious and sustainable.” To engage students in this effort, the UC Office of the President created the President’s GFI Student Fellowship Program. The program provides each campus with funding in 2018-19 for four student awards of $4,000 each.

Soil Health Fellowship: The role of the Soil Health Fellow is to conduct outreach and education related to soil health practices in California. The fellow will work jointly with UC Berkeley researchers at the Berkeley Food Institute/Center for Diversified Farming Systems (BFI/CDFS) working on soil health, as well as the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA). The fellowship will involve field visits to farms in California to document practices that build soil health (including assisting with interviews, filming interviews and farming practices (such as composting, creating hedgerows, and reducing tillage), and creating and editing multimedia content for the web). The products of this research will be used both as part of a BFI/CDFS soil health research project and as outreach information on the CDFA website. This fellow reports to the BFI/CDFS postdoctoral fellow for soil health.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research: Execute online research on soil health practices employed in the on-farm projects.
  • Multimedia Communications: Create several 5-10 minute videos of farmer interviews on practices that build soil health, document soil health practices in photos, participate in farmer interviews, and write blog posts or brief articles for the Berkeley Food Institute and CDFA websites on soil health practices implemented on California farms.

Other GFI Activities: Participation in GFI systemwide activities, including monthly GFI conference calls, attendance at meetings of GFI leadership, and GFI Fellows’ field trip.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Matriculated graduate student at UC Berkeley.
  • Outstanding oral, visual (video/multimedia), and written communication skills, particularly in regards to communications across diverse groups.
  • Willingness to travel to CDFA office in Sacramento, and farm field sites.
  • Passion for agricultural sustainability and research.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a group setting; ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to foresee, identify, and recommend solutions in the position’s areas of responsibility
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Comfort with creativity, innovation, and hard work.
  • Professionalism, courtesy, punctuality, and good humor.
  • Interest and experience in public service and social equity, as core tenets of the UC Berkeley experience and the Berkeley Food Institute mission

FELLOWSHIP SCHEDULE:

Application must be submitted by May 20, 2018 at 5pm Pacific Time.

The student is expected to work on the campus fellowship project an average of 3-5 hours per week for the full 2018-19 academic year. Specific scheduling will be arranged with agreement of fellowship recipient and supervisor.

Systemwide activities for the GFI Fellowship program will begin with an orientation on July 9, 2018 at UC Santa Barbara. Systemwide activities and funded by the UC Global Food Initiative above and beyond the fellowship award, and will also include leadership retreats, a spring field trip, and a closing symposium and poster presentation to be held in conjunction with the CA Higher Education Sustainability Conference (CHESC) in June/July 2019. Additional activities may include quarterly conference calls, attendance at meetings of GFI leadership and participation in GFI-related activities in support of the initiative. Please note, absent exceptional circumstances, that all GFI Student Fellows and Ambassadors are expected to attend the systemwide events.
