Gardens Student Coordinator

Appointment: September 4, 2018 to May 17, 2019, 10 hours/week

Compensation: $16.50 per hour

Coordinator must be a matriculated undergraduate student at UC Berkeley. Priority given to work study students.

Campus Gardens Program
UC Berkeley is home to a growing network of gardens that capture student interest in urban agriculture and greening and respond to urban sustainability, food security, environmental health, and climate change resilience. Many of these are student led with functions for food production, education, research, community building, and cultural representation. Since 2017, the Berkeley Food Institute and Basic Needs Committee have coordinated a campus gardens program which aims to improve integration between urban agriculture and Basic Needs services, increase experiential learning, and initiate cross-campus collaboration.

The Berkeley Food Institute (BFI) seeks to transform food systems to expand access to healthy, affordable food and promote sustainable and equitable food production. We empower new leaders with capacities to cultivate diverse, just, resilient, and healthy food systems. We pursue our mission through interdisciplinary programs in education, research, policy, communications, and community engagement.

About the Position:
The Gardens Student Coordinator will work closely with representatives from various campus gardens and farms and the Campus Gardens Coordinator. The Coordinator will support collaboration between gardens, gardens public communications, and outreach to broader campus community.

Responsibilities:

  • Update the Campus Gardens Manager list-serv
  • Coordinate and facilitate regular garden manager meetings with the support of the Campus Gardens Coordinator
  • Support the development and maintenance of gardens communication materials including the website, flyers, posters, gardens calendar, and regular newsletters
  • Support regular and consistent data collection from the gardens on harvests and student and volunteer participation
  • Support the development and coordination of a basic gardening workshop with the Campus Gardens Coordinator
  • Support the Campus Gardens Coordinator in the above responsibilities, and in related tasks as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, particularly in regards to communications across diverse groups
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Ability to work independently and to foresee, identify, and recommend solutions in the position’s areas of responsibility
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Comfort with creativity, innovation, and hard work
  • Professionalism, courtesy, punctuality, and good humor
  • Interest in agri-food systems
  • Interest and experience in public service and social equity, as core tenets of the UC Berkeley experience and the Berkeley Food Institute mission
  • Preference to students with experience in the UC Berkeley campus gardens community

About the Position:
In 2016-2017 BFI conducted a strategic plan for campus farms and gardens across campus and found opportunities to improve equity and inclusion in gardening and farming spaces. The Gardens Outreach and Equity Fellow will further analyze and summarize these findings and create actionable steps towards cultural and structural changes to improve inclusion, diversity, and representation across the campus gardens. This Fellow will work closely with the Gardens Student Coordinator to inform general gardens outreach language and efforts. The Fellow will report to the Campus Gardens Coordinator.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and summarize existing studies on equity and inclusion challenges for the campus gardens
  • Briefly research precedents from other Universities
  • Outreach and facilitate initial conversations with underrepresents student communities and campus departments to better understand their needs, challenges and potential opportunities
  • Develop an outreach and implementation plan that could include trainings, events, outreach materials, field trips, new programming, signage, infrastructure etc.
  • Modify existing gardens outreach language and materials as needed
  • Initiate the plan in Spring 2018 with the support of garden managers and Campus Gardens Coordinator
  • Support the Campus Gardens Coordinator in the above responsibilities, and in related tasks as needed
