About the Student Organic Garden Association (SOGA)
The Student Organic Garden Association is a UC Berkeley affiliated student organization that stewards the Student Organic Garden on the corner of Virginia and Walnut St in Berkeley, CA. The garden offers several DeCals, weekly open hours, regular workshops and events, and management positions for students and community members to gain hands-on gardening and leadership experience.
About the Position
The purpose of this internship is to provide continuity of management during the semester, which enhances SOGA’s ability to provide experiential learning opportunities to students and community members. The Programs Intern, as a garden manager, is responsible for educational programming and encouraging involvement from the UC Berkeley campus and our surrounding community. This internship will provide resources and support to students in the sustainable food systems movement on campus, as well as students new to gardening and food justice. The Programs Intern will work alongside an Operations Intern and an Administrative Intern/Mentor. All interns will be challenged with being the primary managers of the garden space, administration, and programming. The position will be paid via the Berkeley Food Institute, who serves as our sponsor for these positions.
Responsibilities: Please note that the following responsibilities and weekly tasks are liable to change, dependent upon the garden’s needs and the skills of the applicant.
- Coordinate all outreach events and efforts including tabling, flyering, and networking
- Serve as one of the primary resources to students and community members to learn about how to get involved with the garden
- Determine and facilitate the educational workshop series for the semester (workshops offered at least once a month)
- Plan social events throughout the semester
- Manage the garden’s communication and social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Gmail, and mailing list)
- Contribute to data collection of harvests and attendance to programming events
- Co-facilitate weekly Open Hours with fellow managers and students when possible
- Attend weekly management meetings with fellow interns, DeCal Facilitators, professors, and mentors
- All interns will write a weekly blog entry including photographs documenting progress of the internship
Required Qualifications
- Prior experience (at any capacity) in the Student Organic Garden is required UNLESS you have extensive leadership experience in other farms or gardens. - Committed to addressing urban social equity
- Experience completing independent self-directed projects
- Experience in mentoring or educating your peers
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills, particularly in regards to communications across diverse groups
