The Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) Gardening and Cooking Program is a district-wide program that incorporates hands-on, interdisciplinary, experiential education in 17 school gardens and 4 kitchen classrooms, from preschool through high school. The Program is woven into academic standards, Common Core and Next Generation Science. In addition to the science and language focused curricula, garden classes promote social emotional development and early interaction with nature and food systems. Garden instructors teach from a garden-based learning curriculum developed from years of garden-based education experience.
Gardens Internship

This program offers 5 UC Berkeley students the opportunity to participate as interns with the BUSD Gardening and Cooking Program. Interns will be fully immersed and involved in garden classroom activities, supporting with light gardening, instruction, and classroom management. Interns can choose to focus on garden based learning in elementary, project-based in the garden in middle school, or nutrition education with high school students. An ideal candidate for the nutrition program would be interested in food justice and youth participatory action. Interns will be matched to a garden instructor or health and wellness coordinator, depending on the track chosen, as their mentor. Interns will need to commit to specific days of the week and times.
This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on experience with youth in a garden and nutrition-based school district program under the mentorship of experienced and skilled instructors. Interns will experience the classroom environment first-hand and gain practical teaching skills, while also cultivating relationships with their BUSD instructor and supporting the vitality of the BUSD Gardening and Cooking Program. No gardening skills or teaching experience necessary!
Timing & hours
Minimum 6 to maximum 12 hours/week (min. 90 hours to max of 120 hours per semester). Ideally committing to full day(s). A full semester commitment is required from Sept. 11th to Dec 18, 2017. Internships times will be during the day (between 8am and 2:30pm) and interns are expected to commit to those times weekly for the semester. Weekly hours can be split between several days to fit your schedule. There will also be a mandatory one to two hour orientation on Sept 7th and two, one to two hour mentorship sessions with the full intern and instructor cohort, with support from Program Supervisor and BFI Lead, throughout the course of the semester. Orientation and mentorship hours will contribute to required hours.
Credit
Interns can gain academic credit through the Food Systems Minor ESPM 197 or Education Minor EDUC 197 Section 1. One credit will be given for each 45 hours of internship. This is an unpaid internship.
