REVISED RFP: Videographer / Photographer

Showcasing Stories of California Changemakers in Food Systems

Summary: The Berkeley Food Institute (BFI) at the University of California, Berkeley, (UC Berkeley) seeks an experienced contractor with expertise in videography and photography in a project called “Celebrating Food Systems Changemakers.” We expect the project to be completed in 2-3 months from the start date, beginning in (or before) early December 2017.

Due Date for Proposals: November 3, 2017 by 5 pm Pacific Time

Background and Project Goals

The mission of the Berkeley Food Institute at UC Berkeley is to empower new agriculture and food leaders with the capacity to cultivate diverse, just, resilient, and healthy food systems. Through innovative, interdisciplinary research, education, and policy initiatives, BFI aims to catalyze transformative changes in food systems to ensure that all people have access to healthy, affordable food that is produced sustainably and equitably.

BFI’s project on Emerging Changemakers in Food Systems recognizes that a new cadre of leaders is creating positive change through activism, journalism, business innovation, teaching, farming, and other endeavors. In the farming sector, health and nutrition fields, universities, and beyond, thousands of young champions are building efforts to transform food systems. These efforts have transpired in the face of growing environmental injustices and health disparities. Emerging changemakers represent “bright lights” of hope and inspiration critical to addressing the health, environmental, and socio-economic disparities in our society. Yet, many leaders confront barriers related to these disparities, especially people of color or those coming from disadvantaged communities.

This overall project has two main objectives: 1) to showcase the stories of emerging changemakers, highlighting their experiences, motivations, and challenges, so as to inspire others to get involved in related activities; and 2) to understand what support and opportunities these individuals need to expand their work or gain greater impact and visibility. The project honors people in early stages of their careers, with a focus on leaders of color, who are addressing food systems change in California. BFI has identified 24 changemakers and is undertaking interviews and writing short profiles about their work.

BFI seeks a contractor with expertise in videography and photography to carry out the next stage of the project, as describe below.

SCOPE OF WORK

The independent contractor will undertake the following over approximately 2-3 months:

  • Take high quality photographs of the entire group of 24 changemakers, with aim to produce one or two portraits of each person.
  • Produce short (3-4 minute) video compilation that features 6-8 of these changemakers. The featured individuals will provide responses to two key questions that elicit inspirational answers. (The questions will be selected by the BFI team in advance and discussed with the videographer.) The video is intended to illustrate compelling statements or ideas that will inspire the viewers to become engaged in activities related to food systems change (with an emphasis on equity and health), and motivate viewers to support the causes of such emerging changemakers.

Location: Approximately 1/3 of the total group of 24 individuals are in the greater Bay Area, and others are divided between the Central Valley and Southern California.

Outreach and Audience: The photographs, video, along with the written stories, will be published on BFI’s website and social media, and publicized widely to media. BFI will also publish the photographs and stories in a hard copy publication. The main audience for the project is the public, particularly the younger generation, interested in food systems and environmental, health, and equity issues. We aim to motivate and inspire those people and stimulate their involvement in similar activities. A secondary audience includes philanthropists, educators, and policymakers, who we hope will help address challenges and provide greater opportunities for leadership and support for emerging changemakers.

Logistics: BFI will provide all contact information and background on the individuals, and help to coordinate with them if needed. By the time this video project is started, BFI will have completed written profiles of each changemaker and identified key questions that can be featured in the video. The main BFI project coordinators will be the Executive Director and Communications Manager, and BFI’s Communications Assistant may be available for logistical assistance if needed. BFI will collaborate closely with the contractor throughout the project.

Timing and Sequence:

  • Proposals are due by November 3, 2017, 5pm Pacific Time.
  • BFI will make a decision within two weeks.
  • Project launched as soon as possible, preferably in November or December 2017.
  • Expectation is that the project will be completed within 2-3 months.
