Student Organic Garden Association (SOGA)
The Student Organic Garden Association is a student organization at UC Berkeley that stewards the Student Organic Garden on the corner of Virginia and Walnut St in Berkeley, CA.  Our mission is to provide experiential learning opportunities that promote food justice and sustainable agriculture in our Berkeley community and beyond.  The garden offers several educational DeCals, weekly volunteer open hours, regular workshops and events, and management positions every semester for students to gain hands-on gardening and leadership experience.

About the Position
The purpose of this internship is to provide continuity of management during the semester, which enhances SOGA’s ability to provide experiential learning opportunities to students and community members. The Operations Intern will ensure that the SOGA facilities are in appropriate condition for optimal educational programming. By managing garden maintenance and coordinating volunteers, the Operations Intern will ensure a continuity of education around food sustainability on the UC Berkeley campus and in our surrounding community. This internship will provide resources and support to students in the sustainable food systems movement on campus, as well as students new to gardening and food justice. The Operations Intern will work alongside a Programs Intern and an Administrative Intern/Mentor. All interns will be challenged with being the primary managers of the garden space, administration, and programming.

Responsibilities: Please note that the following responsibilities and weekly tasks are liable to change, dependent upon the garden’s needs and the skills of the applicant.

  • Serve as one of the central managers for SOGA garden operations, administration, and programming
  • Follow a crop plan and coordinate watering and planting schedules (with support from current garden leaders)
  • Maintain garden infrastructure (organizing tool shed, cleaning greenhouse, etc.)
  • Coordinate volunteers for Open Hours, work days, class visits, and other events; you will be the primary contact for garden operations
  • Facilitate weekly Sunday Open Hours 10AM-2PM
  • Manage in-house compost production and compost and mulch pick-ups
  • Coordinate produce harvests to the UC Berkeley Student Food Pantry
  • Collect and organize data of harvests and volunteer attendance
  • Attend weekly management meetings and mentor check-ins
  • Implement self-directed projects that promote garden operations or otherwise make SOGA the best it can be!

Required Qualifications

  • Current UC Berkeley student
  • Available to be at SOGA every Sunday 10am-2pm
  • Must be able to do physically demanding work (digging, hauling, lifting, etc.)
  • Strong working knowledge of garden operations
  • Passion for agri-food systems and food justice
  • Commitment to addressing issues of social, racial, and other inequalities as they relate to food justice and agriculture
  • Ability to work independently
  • Tons of creativity and follow-through to complete helpful garden projects
  • Must have some previous experience with SOGA
  • Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors encouraged to apply

This internship will provide resources and support to students in the sustainable food systems movement on campus, as well as students new to gardening and food justice. The Programs Intern will work alongside an Operations Intern and an Administrative Intern/Mentor. All interns will be challenged with being the primary managers of the garden space, administration, and programming.

Responsibilities: Please note that the following responsibilities and weekly tasks are liable to change, dependent upon the garden’s needs and the skills of the applicant.

  • Serve as one of the central managers for SOGA garden operations, administration, and programming
  • Conduct anti-oppression & inclusivity research, education, and initiatives
  • Determine and facilitate the educational workshop series (approx. 3 workshops during the summer)
  • Manage the garden’s social media platforms (Facebook & Instagram)
  • Manage the garden’s email account
  • Send a biweekly newsletter to our membership
  • Design marketing or educational materials
  • Help communicate with campus community and make connections with other organizations
  • Serve as one of the primary resources to students and community members to get involved with the SOGA
  • Coordinate all outreach events and efforts including tabling, flyering, and networking
  • Co-facilitate weekly Open Hours with fellow managers and students when possible
  • Implement self-directed projects that promote SOGA educational programming, outreach/membership, marketing/publicity, community engagement, or otherwise make SOGA the best it can be!
  • Helping with operations work as needed

Required Qualifications

  • UC Berkeley student for the duration of the internship
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • Interest in marketing, environmental education, communications, and/or non-profit administration
  • Passion for agri-food systems and food justice
  • Commitment to addressing issues of social, racial, and other inequalities as they relate to food justice and agriculture
  • Desire to build your resume with useful skills
  • Some knowledge of garden operations
  • Ability to work independently
  • Tons of creativity and follow-through to complete helpful programs projects
  • Must have some previous experience with SOGA
