Appointment: 240 hours total, either as 6 fulltime weeks or 12 halftime weeks, between May 15–August 15, 2018.

Compensation: GSR Step V: $25.78/hour.

About the Position:

The summer graduate student researcher will have two duties: 1) to assist with development of a new core course for a proposed Graduate Certificate in Food Systems, titled “Transforming the Food System: From Agroecology to Population Health,” and 2) to assist the Berkeley Food Institute with a baseline assessment and compilation of its evaluation approaches and help identify potential improvements. The GSR will report to Kris Madsen, BFI Faculty Director, for the course development, and Ann Thrupp, BFI Executive Director, for evaluation, as well as work closely with other BFI staff.

Responsibilities:

Course Development (60% of time):

  • Draft course prerequisite reading list.
  • Guest speakers: Coordinate communication with each guest speaker to determine scheduling, reading assignments, and classroom activities.
  • Classroom activities: Co-develop mini-challenge assignments that align with weekly topics.
  • Course marketing: Spread awareness and interest in the course among Masters and PhD students across Berkeley’s diverse schools and programs.

Evaluation (40% of time):

  • Review and compile existing evaluation approaches and data (in grant proposals and reports, feedback surveys, and other materials) and consolidate into a concise working report for BFI staff.
  • Assist in developing new evaluation methods that meet BFI’s strategic goals and funder requirements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of the agri-food systems
  • Experience with curriculum development
  • Skills in quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods relevant to BFI programs
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, particularly in regards to communications across diverse groups
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Ability to work independently and to foresee, identify, and recommend solutions in the position’s areas of responsibility
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Comfort with creativity, innovation, and hard work
  • Professionalism, courtesy, punctuality, and good humor
  • Interest and experience in public service and social equity, as core tenets of the UC Berkeley experience and the Berkeley Food Institute mission
