Berkeley Food Institute Summer 2018 Student Communications Assistant
(Title Code 4920: Student Assistant III)
Appointment: May 15 – August 17, 2018 at 20 hours/week. Preference for candidates who are able to continue in the fall semester at 10 hours/week (please address this in your application).
Compensation: $15 per hour

Position:
The role of the Communications Assistant is to help with the Berkeley Food Institute’s external communication activities. This position works closely with the BFI Communications Manager, with additional interaction with the full BFI staff.
Responsibilities to include:
Online Communications:
- Keep BFI web pages up-to-date
- Create and distribute weekly newsletter of announcements and upcoming BFI events, working with BFI team
- Create and distribute bi-weekly Student Opportunities newsletter, working with BFI team
- Enter and update BFI-sponsored events and courtesy postings
- Create regular content for BFI’s Facebook and Twitter channels
- Other digital communications projects as needed
Material Design:
- Assist in content and design of BFI annual report and other handouts as needed, using consistent branding
- Assist in creation of a BFI media packet from existing and new materials
Podcast Marketing and Distribution
- Work with Communications Manager to implement the marketing and distribution of BFI’s Just Food podcast including the following:
- Build web pages with photos and resources for each episode
- Assist in design and execution of social media, newsletter, and personalized outreach campaigns for each episode
- Upload episodes to online platforms and release on schedule
- Track success metrics
Required Qualifications:
- Excellent communication skills, with particular attention to details, both written and visual, particularly in regards to communications across diverse groups
- Strong skills in copyediting and proofreading
- Experience with email marketing campaigns, with a preference for knowledge of MailChimp
- Strong skills in Adobe Creative Cloud, particularly Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator
- Experience with WordPress platform
- Experience with social media platforms and metrics
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
- Ability to work independently and to foresee, identify, and recommend solutions in the position’s areas of responsibility
- Strong attention to detail
- Comfort with creativity, innovation, and hard work
- Professionalism, courtesy, punctuality, and good humor
- Interest and experience in agri-food systems
- Interest and experience in public service and social equity, as core tenets of the UC Berkeley experience and the Berkeley Food Institute mission
