CALL FOR APPLICATIONS:

The University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a student fellowship opportunity with the University of California Global Food Initiative (GFI). This fellowship will allow an outstanding graduate student to serve as the Fellow for Equity and Inclusion.

FELLOWSHIP AMOUNT: $4,000
The funding will be administered as a stipend. Applicants should be aware that receipt of a fellowship may affect financial aid packages. If you have a question about impact on financial aid, please discuss with your financial aid officer.

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP:
Background on the UC Global Food Initiative Student Fellowship Program:
The overarching goal of the University of California Global Food Initiative is “to harness the resources of the University of California—its research, people, expertise, and tradition of public service—to put the world on a pathway to feed itself in ways that are nutritious and sustainable.” To engage students in this effort, the UC Office of the President created the President’s GFI Student Fellowship Program. The program provides each campus with funding in 2017-18 for four student awards of $4,000 each.

Equity and Inclusion Fellowship: This fellowship recipient will serve as a student leader for the ongoing project, “Building Equitable and Inclusive Food Systems at UC Berkeley.” Entering its third year, the project aims to improve campus climate through addressing the barriers and possibilities for greater equity, diversity, and inclusion in the UC Berkeley food system, including in academics and educational programming, student-led initiatives, and campus operations. The fellow reports to Rosalie Z. Fanshel, Program Manager at the Berkeley Food Institute.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Mapping Project: Work closely with project leadership staff to further develop and execute the digital, interactive UC Berkeley Food Landscape Map, including:

  • Develop 2017-18 map strategy and identify priority data points.
  • Collect data, and co-mentor undergraduate data collectors.
  • Participate in data visualization.

Campus Policy Activities: Work closely with project leadership staff to:

  • Develop recommendations resulting from the mapping project.
  • Present recommendations to campus leadership, ranging from student government to upper campus administration.
  • Develop strategies towards implementations of recommendations to the extent possible.
  • Participate in efforts to form a UC Berkeley Food Policy Council.

Other GFI Activities: Participation in GFI systemwide activities, including monthly GFI conference calls, attendance at meetings of GFI leadership, and GFI Fellows’ field trip.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Matriculated graduate student at UC Berkeley.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, particularly in regards to interpersonal communications across diverse groups.
  • At least two years of experience in researching and/or organizing complex information and working on interdisciplinary approaches to problem-solving; advanced skills in data collection and analysis.
  • Experience with facilitation, relationship-building, and project coordination among diverse people and programs.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a group setting; ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrated creativity, innovation, and commitment.
  • At least two years of work experience and/or public service related to food and/or agriculture, with specific familiarity with structural analysis of food systems and structural barriers to inclusion.
  • Experience with equity, inclusion, diversity, anti-oppression and anti-racism trainings and frameworks.
  • Experience with data visualization preferred.
  • Experience with food policy preferred.

FELLOWSHIP SCHEDULE:
Application must be submitted by Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 5pm Pacific Time.
A multidisciplinary committee will review applications, conduct interviews as necessary, and announce decisions by May 26, 2017. The student is expected to work on the campus fellowship project an average of 5 hours per week for the full 2017-18 academic year. Specific scheduling will be arranged with agreement of fellowship recipient and supervisor.

Systemwide activities for the GFI Fellowship program will begin with an orientation on June 26, 2017 at UC Santa Barbara. Systemwide activities and funded by the UC Global Food Initiative above and beyond the fellowship award, and will also include leadership retreats, a spring field trip, and a closing symposium and poster presentation to be held in conjunction with the CA Higher Education Sustainability Conference (CHESC) in June/July 2018. Additional activities may include quarterly conference calls, attendance at meetings of GFI leadership and participation in GFI-related activities in support of the initiative. Please note, absent exceptional circumstances, that all GFI Student Fellows and Ambassadors are expected to attend the systemwide events.
