ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP:
Background on the UC Global Food Initiative Student Fellowship Program: The overarching goal of the University of California Global Food Initiative is “to harness the resources of the University of California—its research, people, expertise, and tradition of public service—to put the world on a pathway to feed itself in ways that are nutritious and sustainable.” To engage students in this effort, the UC Office of the President created the President’s GFI Student Fellowship Program. The program provides each campus with funding in 2017-18 for four student awards of $4,000 each.
Nutrition Policy/Food Environment Fellowship:
UC Berkeley is committed to supporting the health and well-being of all members of the campus community by ensuring accessibility to healthier food and beverage choices. A campus policy is needed to fulfill this commitment and is one of the most effective public health strategies to improve the diet and health outcomes of the campus population. Health education alone—in the absence of change to the food environment —does not produce lasting behavioral change.
This new Food and Beverage Choices policy establishes nutrition standards to ensure healthy food and beverage choices are available in on campus retail foodservice and markets, vending machines, athletic concessions, and University-sponsored meetings and events. The overarching goals are to improve accessibility of whole and fresh foods, provide healthier alternatives to sugar-sweetened beverages, and engage positive communications promoting healthier choices. Fellow will work closely with the Nutrition Policy Advisory Committee members and University Health Services to support the implementation, communication and evaluation plans for the policy. Fellow reports to Kim Guess, Wellness Program Dietitian, University Health Services.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Policy Implementation: Assist with developing the communication and implementation plans for this first year of the policy.
- Assist in the development of the communication and implementation plans, including participating in the Nutrition Policy Advisory Committee.
- Set up processes for analysis of annual sales data and a template for a Policy Annual Report for the measuring the progress of the policy.
Policy Evaluation: Develop the tools, processes, and systems to support measuring the impact of the policy.
- Develop the process for the annual Berkeley Menu Assessment with on-campus third-party retail vendors, including exploring integration with annual Sustainability Food Tracking Tool.
- Identify opportunities to provide experiential learning projects for students in Public Health and Nutritional Sciences & Toxicology that contribute to measuring the impact of the policy.
- Setup a research protocol to measure change in eating behaviors.
- Other opportunities based on interest and/or experience.
Other GFI Activities: Participation in GFI systemwide activities, including monthly GFI conference calls, attendance at meetings of GFI leadership, and GFI Fellows’ field trip.

- Matriculated graduate student at UC Berkeley.
- Knowledgeable about food and nutrition; MPH nutrition or related candidate preferred.
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills, particularly in regards to interpersonal communications across diverse groups.
- At least two years of experience in researching and/or organizing complex information and working on interdisciplinary approaches to problem-solving.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a group setting; ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Demonstrated creativity, innovation, and commitment.
- Work experience in food service and/or policy work preferred.
FELLOWSHIP SCHEDULE:
Application must be submitted by Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 5pm Pacific Time.
A multidisciplinary committee will review applications, conduct interviews as necessary, and announce decisions by May 26, 2017. Specific scheduling will be arranged with agreement of fellowship recipient and supervisor.
Systemwide activities for the GFI Fellowship program will begin with an orientation on June 26, 2017 at UC Santa Barbara. Systemwide activities and funded by the UC Global Food Initiative above and beyond the fellowship award, and will also include leadership retreats, a spring field trip, and a closing symposium and poster presentation to be held in conjunction with the CA Higher Education Sustainability Conference (CHESC) in June/July 2018. Additional activities may include quarterly conference calls, attendance at meetings of GFI leadership and participation in GFI-related activities in support of the initiative.
