CALL FOR APPLICATIONS:
The University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a student fellowship opportunity with the University of California Global Food Initiative (GFI). This fellowship will allow an outstanding undergraduate graduate student to serve as the Student Ambassador.
FELLOWSHIP AMOUNT: $4,000
The funding will be administered as a stipend. Applicants should be aware that receipt of a fellowship may affect financial aid packages. If you have a question about impact on financial aid, please discuss with your financial aid officer.
Applicant must be a matriculated undergraduate student at UC Berkeley. To apply, submit the following items by email to foodinstitute@berkeley.edu with the subject line “GFI Fellowship: Student Ambassador.”
- Cover letter stating your reasons for application to this fellowship and a summary of most relevant experiences, skills, and/or education.
- Resume (limit 2 pages).

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP:
Background on the UC Global Food Initiative Student Fellowship Program: The overarching goal of the University of California Global Food Initiative is “to harness the resources of the University of California—its research, people, expertise, and tradition of public service—to put the world on a pathway to feed itself in ways that are nutritious and sustainable.” To engage students in this effort, the UC Office of the President created the President’s GFI Student Fellowship Program. The program provides each campus with funding in 2017-18 for four student awards of $4,000 each.
Student Ambassador: The GFI Student Ambassador role formed in response to a desire for increased student engagement in the Global Food Initiative both systemwide and at the campus level. The Student Ambassador serves as the GFI student engagement go‐to person for their campus. Ambassadors will be invited to participate in leadership meetings of the UC Global Food Initiative where they will share their student voice, report out on student engagement activities, and connect with GFI working group leaders across the system. The Student Ambassador will also work closely with the Berkeley Food Institute staff to increase student opportunities in campus food and agriculture-related activities.
The student ambassador will have a $1,000 programming budget for on-campus activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Student Opportunities Newsletter: Create and distribute weekly Berkeley Food Institute Student Opportunities Newsletter.
Campus Food-related Student Group Networking and Promotion: Encourage cross-fertilization among UC Berkeley food-related student groups via:
- Promoting all student group events on the Berkeley Food Institute campus calendar and other social media channels.
- Work with Berkeley Food Institute communications staff on showcasing student opportunities related to food and agriculture.
- Actively participate in the Berkeley Food Institute undergraduate council, as well as facilitate collaboration among graduate student food-related activities.
GFI Meetings and Reporting:
- Participation in GFI systemwide activities, including monthly GFI conference calls, attendance at meetings of GFI leadership, and GFI Fellows’ field trip. In addition, attend in-person GFI leadership meetings.
- Participate actively in campus GFI Working Group meetings.
- Meet regularly with other UC Berkeley GFI fellows to ensure representation of their projects and needs.
- Submit quarterly updates, along with other GFI working group leaders, sharing the status of engagement efforts; provide student feedback and communicate campus needs and opportunities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Matriculated undergraduate student at UC Berkeley.
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills, particularly in regards to interpersonal communications across diverse groups.
- Experience in researching and/or organizing complex information and working on interdisciplinary approaches to problem-solving.
- Experience with facilitation, relationship-building, and project coordination among diverse people and programs.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a group setting; ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Demonstrated creativity, innovation, and commitment.
- Work experience and/or public service related to food and/or agriculture in a leadership role.
FELLOWSHIP SCHEDULE:
Application must be submitted by Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 5pm Pacific Time.
A multidisciplinary committee will review applications, conduct interviews as necessary, and announce decisions by May 26, 2017. The student is expected to work on the campus fellowship project an average of 5 hours per week for the full 2017-18 academic year. Specific scheduling will be arranged with agreement of fellowship recipient and supervisor.
Systemwide activities for the GFI Fellowship program will begin with an orientation on June 26, 2017 at UC Santa Barbara. Systemwide activities and funded by the UC Global Food Initiative above and beyond the fellowship award, and will also include leadership retreats, a spring field trip, and a closing symposium and poster presentation to be held in conjunction with the CA Higher Education Sustainability Conference (CHESC) in June/July 2018. Additional activities may include quarterly conference calls, attendance at meetings of GFI leadership and participation in GFI-related activities in support of the initiative. Please note, absent exceptional circumstances, that all GFI Student Fellows and Ambassadors are expected to attend the systemwide events.
