Soda consumption is implicated in the development of obesity and diabetes. The beverage industry spends billions of dollars annually promoting its products; soda taxes are one way to level the playing field.

Bay Area Soda Taxes

As of 2018, the Bay Area is home to 4 cities with soda taxes: Berkeley, Albany, Oakland, and San Francisco, of which UC Berkeley researchers are studying the effects on consumption and purchasing.

Research Dissemination

Funded by the California Program on Access to Care (CPAC), BFI works to disseminate evidence on the effects of sugar sweetened beverage taxes on their consumption.

Collaboration with Mexican Researchers

Through a joint partnership between the BFI and Mexican researchers at the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico, the effects of sugar sweetened beverages on oral health and nutrition are studied.
