Policy Summary
The authors call on President Obama to issue an executive order for the formation of a national food policy council. While the United States has agricultural policies, they are antiquated and structured for a time when American farmers could not produce enough food for the country. The current agriculture and food landscape looks much different and because of our agricultural policies and lack of a food policy human, environment, and community health are all suffering. Brazil created a national food policy and has seen dramatic reductions in poverty and childhood mortality. The authors argue that food systems problems are complex, but not impossible to solve, especially with a national food policy in place.
