Policy Summary

Participation in Oportunidades, a large-scale cash transfer program was associated with lower prevalence of obesity and hypertension and better self-reported health in adults in rural Mexico. These findings have implications for large-scale poverty alleviation programs paired with health behavior requirements and policies that support them to curb rapidly increasing obesity and related noncommunicable diseases around the world.
