What organic and Fair Trade labels do not tell us: toward a place-based understanding of certification

Certifications around organic and fair trade do not accurately reflect the social and environmental conditions of production, thus potentially jeopardizing the entire basis of the certification systems. A more nuanced and robust incorporation of “place” at the point of production into international certified commodity systems would go a long way.
