In this first episode, we explore a new, opt-in certification program for farms. The Equitable Food Initiative (EFI) is a unique collaboration between workers, growers, and retailers that improves working conditions, pesticide management, and food safety—producing better fruits and vegetables while providing farm workers with higher pay and greater protections.

We speak with Barbara Resendiz and Juan Cortez, employees at Sierra Farms in Moss Landing, CA who have benefitted from EFI standards in both their personal and professional lives. We also hear from Christy Getz of UC Berkeley and Ron Strochlic of UC Agriculture and Natural Resources, who have been studying the EFI model for the past year as part of a seed grant awarded by the Berkeley Food Institute. You can find EFI-certified berries under the GoodFarms label at Costco’s up and down the West Coast.
