Celebrating Our Graduate Certificate in Food Systems Class of 2024
BFI awarded certificates to 31 graduate students who have been incorporating food systems into their education at Berkeley.
BFI is proud to announce this year’s 2024 graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Food Systems. We are honored to have awarded 31 certificates to graduate students this year who will no doubt go on to make a lasting impact on our local and global food system. Since its start in 2019, BFI has awarded 117 certificates to promising food systems changemakers at UC Berkeley, creating a growing alumni network of passionate equitable food systems leaders.
BFI celebrated the Graduate Certificate in Food Systems graduating class of 2024 with a sunny ceremony at Berkeley Way West on May 9th. The graduates, who come from a wide range of programs and schools across campus including the School of Public Health, the College of Engineering, the Goldman School of Public Policy, and more, received green cords and locally sourced food and farming gifts honoring their accomplishments. The graduates also heard from the core course instructor Kris Madsen, who gave parting words on the importance of continued activism for social change within the food system.
Class of 2023 recent graduate, Summer Lewis, affirmed this idea by relaying how she has utilized her Graduate Certificate in Food Systems to inform her current work supporting Indigenous communities as a consultant and advocate for tribal public health and education.
As the class of 2024 GCFS graduates go on to their future careers in academics, public health, law, city planning, and food systems, we are proud to know that they will enter their respective futures with a deep knowledge and understanding of a truly values based and equitable food system. We look forward to continuing conversations and working with them as alumni.
