For Students

Fellowships

The Berkeley Food Institute is committed to connecting students to careers in food systems. As part of our mission to provide mentorship to students, we have developed opportunities for students to work with BFI in a range of capacities, including research, communications, community engagement, and policy.

Every year since 2014, we have hosted fellows through the University of California Global Food Initiative, which was launched to align “the university’s research, extension, outreach, and operations in a sustained effort to demonstrate and develop solutions for food security, health, and sustainability.” UC GFI fellows work on a range of projects related to food systems, including soil health, basic needs, and food systems careers. The program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.

The application process for the UC Global Food Initiative Fellowship takes place in late spring. We post any open fellowship opportunities on our Careers page.

As funding allows, we have also developed fellowship programs depending on current BFI projects and programs. This has included a Graduate Student Research Fellowship to support student research advised by one of our affiliated faculty, working group fellowships based on affiliated faculty research, and the Community Engagement and Leadership Fellowship to support student-led community-engaged or participatory research.

We are not currently receiving applications for fellowships at the Berkeley Food Institute. Please check back here for future opportunities.

If you would like to help fund future fellowship cohorts, please consider supporting us.
